One of the purposes of scouting is to teach young men about giving of themselves and service to the community. Each year, on the Martin Luther King holiday, the troop holds a function called "warm nights". In conjunction with the Oxon Hill United Methodist Church and the Prince George's County Department of Social Services, the troop plans and prepares a meal for the area's homeless. On a very cold blustry evening of January 17th, about 40 homeless and very needy persons (adults and children) gathered at the church for an old fashion home cooked meal consisting of meatloaf, mashed potatos, dinner rolls, assorted vegatables, desserts, juices, and coffee. The church then provided them shelter for the night. Leftovers were divided up for breakfast or packed for lunch. I know there were alot of meatloaf sandwiches packed for Tuesday's lunch!
